La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's Association

History

The La Plata Cattlemen's organized, elected officers, and drew up by-laws in 1950.  The organization has been a strong voice in La Plata County since then. The Archuleta County Cattlemen merged with our organization in the late 1990.

At the time, the ranchers started our organization, the concern was livestock theft.  Since that time we have evolved into an organization that helps to protect property rights and protect the interests of our members through representation at the state capitol.  With affiliation with the state association, we are well represented.  We were instrumental in obtaining an agricultural tax exemption on farm equipment and supplies in our county and then later the state followed suit.

The La Plata - Archuleta Cattlemen's Association strives to keep their members informed and to represent their interests at the state and national level.

Meetings

The La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's Association meets on the fourth Monday of each month during the winter months (September, October, January, February, March, April, and May). There are no meetings in November and December as members are busy with family activities. Because of special activities during the summer, regular membership meetings are not held in June, July, or August. Traditionally the organization will hold a family picnic in June, the Annual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off is held during the last weekend of July, and in August the organization and its members take an active role in the La Plata and Archuleta County Fairs.
