Colorado is Better With Beef

ARVADA, Colo.In light of recent media reports surrounding encouragement of the Colorado Department of Agriculture to explore a transition to plant-based protein alternatives, the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) swiftly engaged with the Governor about beef production’s integral place in both Colorado’s economy and consumers’ households.CCA was the first organization to reach out to the administration for clarification on the Governor’s comments, and while extremely disappointed, CCA also understood it was necessary to break down these communication barriers to combat the misinformation that is currently circulating about imitation protein.

Beef producers across the United States have long integrated new technologies into their operations, all the while honoring their responsibilities and role as stewards of the land. According to A Life Cycle Assessment of the Environmental Impacts of the Beef System in the USA, conducted by BASF Corporation, technological advancements in the beef industry supply chain have allowed the industry to improve efficiency and animal well-being, while reducing the carbon footprint by 16 percent. Producers also use fewer natural resources for every pound of beef produced, and utilize cattle's upcycling ability to transform human inedible plants into high-quality protein.

Beef is part of a nutrient dense, well-rounded diet. Just one 3 oz serving of beef provides ten essential nutrients, including nearly half of the average person’s daily value of protein.  However, beef is so much more than just a nutritious option for consumers. “Beef producers in Colorado not only provide a safe, wholesome product at an affordable price for consumers, but also provide abundant open space, wildlife habitat, and clean air and water, things Coloradans cherishat no additional charge,” said CCA’s President, Steve Wooten. The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade states that the “agriculture industry is a critical driver of Colorado’s overall economy, contributing $41 billion” of which the cattle industry is the largest contributing sector.

CCA looks forward to constructive engagement with Governor Polis on behalf of Colorado beef producers to foster a continued dialog centered around issues of mutual importance. Since Colorado’s inception in 1876, CCA has had a long-standing history of engagement with senior state leadership, and looks forward to continuing that relationship with Governor Polis through his tenure.

In order to provide factual, transparent information about beef production, Betterwithbeef.org will be launched in the near future. This campaign will provide consumers with honest information they can depend on, because Colorado truly is #BetterwithBeef.
