PUEBLO, Colo. – Country music and cowboy poetry took center
stage at the Colorado State Fair Events Center for Operation:
Blizzard Benefit. Proceeds from the concert will aid in disaster
relief for farmers and ranchers in Southeastern Colorado who
were affected by the string of December blizzards.
“It’s been inspiring to see so many artists, organizations, and
Colorado residents come together for such a great cause,” said
Colorado State Fair General Manager, Chris Wiseman. “A
continuing message throughout this entire process has been
‘neighbor helping neighbor’ and this concert proves how
important our agriculture communities are to the residents of
this state.”
The Operation: Blizzard Benefit featured Michael Martin Murphey
and a long list of other talented performers: Baxter Black,
Waddie Mitchell, Gary McMahan, Don Edwards, Carin Mari and Pony
Express, Sons and Brothers, Sarah Murphey, the Pueblo Symphony
Orchestra and Mei-Ling Felton. All artists donated their time
and talents to the benefit.
Among the attendees were Governor Bill Ritter, Colorado
Commissioner of Agriculture John Stulp, former Colorado
Commissioner of Agriculture Don Ament, and Congresswoman Marilyn
Musgrave. During the festivities, Governor Ritter proclaimed
March 18th as Michael Martin Murphey Day.
Although donations are still coming, so far, approximately
$680,000 has been raised in cash, hay and in-kind donations. A
silent auction also brought in approximately $18,500 and a total
of 3358 concert tickets were sold.
“Our original goal was to raise $500,000 and we are proud to
have surpassed that number,” said Alan Foutz, President of the
Colorado Farm Bureau. “But it’s important to remember that this
is an on-going effort. It’s not too late to donate, and we
certainly encourage residents to continue to support our
agriculture folks across the state.”
A tax deductible donation can still be made online at
www.blizzardbenefit.org or by sending a check to the Colorado
Farm Bureau Foundation at 9177 E. Mineral Circle, Centennial,
CO, 80112. A portion of the proceeds will used to establish a
permanent Colorado Agricultural Disaster Fund. In the future,
this fund would be available immediately to ag producers in the
event of a catastrophic natural disaster.
The event was a joint effort by Colorado Farm Bureau, Colorado
Department of Agriculture/Colorado State Fair, Colorado
Cattlemen’s Association and Colorado Livestock Association.
