CCA Offers Age and Source Verification Forms to Members

Arvada, Colo. August, 2005 – With beef export talks on the table, and agreements imminent, age and source verification is becoming a key issue to beef producers. As a result, the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) has developed a template for age and source verification, to assist members in developing their own verification procedures.

Verifying the age and source of cattle does not have to be a complicated process. Now CCA has taken it one step further, and made it even easier. The forms can be downloaded from the CCA website at www.coloradocattle.org. For those who prefer to hand write the information, CCA is offering to electronically scan the completed documents to a PDF or Word file, making the record-keeping process efficient and neat.

So what does age and source verification mean in the marketplace?
• Source verification of cattle, with all background information and documentation, helps a potential buyer determine the value of the calves. The buyer offers premiums for quality, for background information, and for confidence in the reliability of the information presented. Quality cannot be determined solely by inspection, so the source verification does influence the buyers.
• Source verification has potential to open markets that might not be available to those cattle that are not age and source verified. For example, some export markets will only import cattle that are age verified.
• Producers whose cattle have been age and source verified reported increased marketability and premiums.

Verification procedures:
The source-verification process is based on the simple concept: say what you will do, do what you say and be able to prove it with records. Producers should have a signed affidavit that moves with the animals from seller to buyer. CCA is providing an age and source-verification documentation form on their web site. This document is not a guarantee of source-verification or higher premiums, but an opportunity for CCA to help producers.

This is a great opportunity for producers to be proactive and potentially garner a dividend in the process. CCA is proud to support and contribute to Colorado producers’ needs, and will continue to work toward enhancing the livelihood and environment for Colorado beef producers.
