Colorado Beef Quality Assurance Program

Beef Quality Assurance Program offered to producers

The Colorado BQA Program is managed by a council whose members are derived from the following organizations:  Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, Colorado Livestock Association, Colorado Department of Agriculture, Colorado State University and Colorado Beef Council.

There are two co-chairs on the council representing the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and the Colorado Livestock Association. Also, as requested by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, each state needs at least one BQA coordinator. Colorado has two such coordinators:  Terry Fankhauser from the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and Laura Behrends from the Colorado Livestock Association.

This council and coordinators design the structure and direct the actions of the Colorado Beef Quality Assurance Program and all entities associated with it. By assisting producers in providing a product to all consumers that is safe and wholesome, Colorado’s beef industry can accomplish the mission of maximizing consumer confidence.

An economic loss of $68.82 for non-fed beef per animal (National Market Cow and Bull Audit,1999) and a $82.42 loss industry wide per animal (National Beef Quality Audit, 1995) illustrates the need for a proactive quality program in the beef industry. The focus of BQA in Colorado and on the national level is heavily based in the education of producers through statistically-verified information that will be used to increase the quality, consistency and value of beef starting from conception to consumption.

Levels of Training

Level One Training Includes:

A two-hour introduction to Colorado Beef Quality Assurance Program (CBQA), including the history and need for the program. The program also addresses what it takes to produce quality-assured beef in the 21st century.  Level  one certification must be renewed every two years.

Level Two Training Includes:

Level two certification will act as an operational certification allowing one person from each operation to certify employees at Colorado's BQA Program Level 1 classification. In-depth instruction on implementing a Total Quality Management Program on your operation will be taught. Producers will learn to create a quality manual by designating critical control points (CCP) in their operation and create standard operating procedures that will be utilized as corrective and preventative action plans. Level 2 certification will assist you in implementing a total quality management system on your operation. Participants must submit a completed quality manual following the level two training to become level two certified.  Level two certification must be renewed every two years.

Verification following training:

A third party voluntary verification stating that you indeed are implementing the Total Quality Management System. This step adds "teeth" to your program.

Re-certification

Re-certification may be completed one of the following ways:

  • Retake current certified level
  • Complete next highest certification level.  Valid only if currently certified at level 1.
  • Take special re-certification test administered by mail.
