The Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) held their annual Legislative Luncheon on January 20^th at the capitol and the Scottish Rite Masonic Center.

Over 70 CCA members toured the capitol and had the opportunity to learn how the association has helped to shape and build the state of Colorado. Members had the opportunity to visit with state legislatures about issues affecting the agriculture industry and overlook the House chambers from the balcony. Participants also had the opportunity to sit in on the joint Agriculture and Budget committee meeting.

The group met at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center to go over the current CCA tracking list with lobbyist Laura Locke. Here members were prepped on issues and bills that will be facing the agriculture and beef industry during this legislative session. This briefing gave them a chance to acquire some facts and position on current bulls so they could discuss them with their representatives.

Lunch found the CCA members joined by approximately 50 state representatives, senators, commissioners and staffers. This opportunity gave members a chance to meet and greet their representatives and discuss issues facing them in their own regions of Colorado.

CCA President, Tim Canterbury welcomed representatives to the luncheon and thanked each for their continued support of the beef industry. Commissioner of Agriculture, John Stulp spoke to the group and then, one-by-one, let the legislators introduce themselves and tell what districts and counties they represent.

CCA believes this is a great venue for its members to voice their concerns and get to know their legislators better. In some cases, this is the only opportunity producers have to meet with their legislators and explain to them the importance of the beef industry. Through this event, both sides learned a little bit more about each other’s day-to-day life and the challenges they face.

Following lunch, members and guests headed over to the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) for the CCA Producer Show and Sale. The CCA Producer Show held four pens of commercial open heifers owned by CCA members. The show was followed by the NWSS Commercial Sale and CCA Producer Sale. The night was topped off with the Stockmen’s Night Barbeque sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health.

The Grand Champion Pen was awarded to Culver Cattle Operations of Lafayette, Colo. Owner Jon Gabel entered ten head of Angus 11-month old heifers. All the heifer calves were born February 2009, all sired by Redland Napolean 2475, a Culver Cattle herd sire. The heifers sold to Dan May of Oklahoma for $1,200 each.

The Reserve Champion Pen was awarded to Walter Angus of Hudson, Colo. Owner Terry Walter entered eleven head of Angus 9 1/2-month old heifers. The sires of these heifers are from WXW Mytty In Focus sons.
