2010 David G. and Lucille S. Rice Legislative Internship
ARVADA, Colo., October 26, 2009 - The Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is seeking interested applicants for the 2010 David G. and Lucille S. Rice Legislative Internship. Through the Rice Internship, CCA provides the opportunity for an individual to learn a great deal about government structure, as well as agricultural policies in which CCA members have a vested interest. This internship will involve working on legislative issues concerning Colorado beef producers and landowners to facilitate the understanding of Colorado’s legislative process.
The Colorado Cattlemen’s Association is honored to offer this internship. Dave Rice was CCA’s Executive Vice President from 1949 to 1981 and the Rice family continues to be a loyal member and supporter of CCA. The Rice Internship was originated to honor the over fifty-year commitment to the cattle and livestock industry of David and Lucille.
The Rice Internship is a great way to get first-hand experience on how CCA is able to work with other associations, organizations, and government agencies on issues that support the interests of Colorado’s beef producers and landowners.
The Rice Internship will involve the following:
- Track, summarize and analyze legislation of interest to CCA
- Attend committee hearings
- Assist in preparing testimony
- Prepare legislative summaries and analysis for CCA member information and action
- Develop association written comments regarding state and federal issues
Taking part in the Rice Internship has proven to be a valuable experience for each of the interns who have participated in the program. Many of the interns feel that the Rice Internship drives home many of the concepts between politics and agriculture they are taught in their academic courses. At the same time, interns are able to utilize and practice the knowledge and skills they have learned and apply them in a real-life setting.
This past legislative session had no shortage of issues to work on, and the 2010 session looks to be no different. Issues such as animal welfare, global climate change, conservation of wildlife, and the state budget will be hot topics that will continue to come before congress. We are looking forward to this next legislative session and are also looking forward to working with the new 2010 David G. and Lucille S. Rice intern.
